Reggio Emilia Emergent Curriculum

An ‘Emergent Curriculum’ is sensible but not predictable.  It requires of its teachers considerable trust in the power of play (with children) – trust in spontaneous decision-making among possibilities.  The following is how our centre interprets the emergent curriculum:

  • Encouraging children to be responsible for their own learning through choices in activities, interests and routine.
  • Using conversations, actions and play as the basis for teaching.
  • Involving the children as partners in teaching by seeking out ideas, opinions, thoughts and questions.
  • Encouraging the children to further their independence and self-help skills by assisting within the routine.
  • Involving the children in interest projects to further their learning and knowledge.
  • Involving the families as partners to gather a comprehensive picture of the whole child.
  • Promoting positive relationships with individuals and in group experiences (small and large)
  • Using the physical environment as a third teacher to promote choices throughout the day.
  • Giving children control of the day within a flexible and consistent routine.

The emergent curriculum takes into account the “whole” child.  Each child’s ability, personality, style of learning and rate of development is unique and as teachers and carers at Warriewood Child Care we allow the child to develop through their interests.

The environment will be filled with the potential for learning and be used as a partner in the learning process.  Children will be encouraged to be responsible for their own learning by promoting choice in their daily activities.  In our centre we see ourselves as partners in the children’s learning and supplement the children’s choices to extend their knowledge and experience.  Activities and experiences are chosen by the children and are guided by staff in order to find a natural balance to provide an optimal learning environment.  The activities and experiences will balance stimulation, flexibility, uniqueness, diversity, creativity, investigation, experimentation and discovery with reliable routine of familiarity, consistency, security and warmth.

The routine is paramount to the success of the emergent curriculum.  We will maintain the consistency and security of a routine, whilst still offering choice.  It is how we offer choice within the predictable that shapes our centre.
